Day #1 with Nani and Gramps

Mommy and I are at the Books on the Nightstand Booktopia retreat this weekend, little one, so you are spending the weekend with Nani and Gramps.

Nani sent us this email recapping your evening:

Could she be asleep?

EEK

We must have really knocked the poor little thing out.

We had the bath - which was fun - she was great in the tub with the crayons and loved all of the ducks.

When it was time to come out - we let the water out and she came right out - no trauma.

Read a little bit from the books that she brought and then rolling Katie around in the baby carriage.

When I told her it was bedtime she threw herself on the floor (in Clara fashion) - I picked her up - put her in the bed and she said that she didn't want Katie or Baby in bed with her. She brought Katie into our room and Baby into the living room (go figure) and then happily went into her bed.

AMAZING

We have a another big day planned for tomorrow.

In command of Mommy’s wardrobe

When you want to talk to the baby, little one, you ask Mommy to lift her shirt.

Then there are moments when you ask Mommy to cover her belly, almost upset that she would even think of exposing it while watching television.

We suspect that you think that the baby can see when Mommy’s shirt is lifted up, but we’re not sure.

Either way, watching you talk to the baby and kiss Mommy’s belly is priceless, little one.

Few things give you greater joy than a full length mirror, little one.

The last one broke about a year ago. I give this one two weeks.

The joy of a cupcake

I don’t know if I have ever felt as much joy as you do over this cupcake, little one.

These photographs were taken by your mother during dessert at Effie’s restaurant. Since I was sitting beside you, eating a slice of coconut cream pie, I had no idea that you were literally bursting with joy over the cupcake.

I knew you liked it, but I had no idea how much you liked it.

These might be my favorite photographs ever taken of you, little one. Nothing makes me happier than to see you smile.

   

Hyperbole?

You claim that this is “the tallest tower ever!”

It’s a strange comment, little one, since I’ve seen you build taller towers in the past.

Perhaps you are one for hyperbole and I am just learning this now.

Gratitude journal: Frightened daughter

Is it wrong of me to be grateful that the animatronic dinosaurs at the Connecticut Science Center scared the hell out of you, little one, causing you to cling to me like never before?

Sure, it would’ve been nice if you had enjoyed the exhibit a little more, but having an opportunity to play the role of the protector and know that my daughter felt safe in my arms was worth a little bit of fear.

Besides, being a little afraid can be fun at any age. Right?

Traitorous progeny

You were visiting a farm, populated by at least a dozen different animals, and more importantly, you know that bees kill me dead.

So with all the animals that you could choose to imitate, why would you choose this, little one?

For the record, you are allergic to peanuts. If you’re not careful, I might just rent a Mr. Peanut costume and torment you with it for a day.

First pedaling!

You’ve had your butt in the tricycle seat many times, little one, but as far as actually pedaling under your own power, today was the first time this has happened.

You initially told me that the street was for cars and insisted on riding on the grass, but once you realized how much easier the driveway was for pedaling, you headed down the street with little complaint.

I was so proud of you, little one. We pedaled to the end of the street, at which point you told me you were tired, turned around and headed home. I ended up carrying the tricycle most of the way back, and when we finally got home, you demanded milk in such a way as I have never seen before.

You were tired and you were thirsty, little one, but you were also feeling pretty good about your first successful trip on a tricycle.
