It’s only happened two or three times, but there have been times when you wake up in the middle of the night, crying and screaming, and though we continue to lie in our bed, allowing you to scream your head off in hopes that you will fall back asleep, you occasionally… no… you rarely do not.
Last night was one such night.
On these occasions, after we have waited and waited for you to calm down, we eventually bring you into our bed, which, to be honest, is an absolute joy for us. By 11:00 we usually miss you and are lamenting the fact that we won’t see you until morning, so we have never begrudged the opportunity to snuggle with you.
The fact that this has happened only three or four times probably helps.
We usually chalk these fits of screaming up to a nightmare, but you’ve recently sprouted a mouthful of teeth, all at the same time, and although you haven’t really complained about your burgeoning garden of enamel, we assume that it’s got to hurt from time to time. Perhaps last night was one of these instances.
To be honest, these nights tend to go better for Mommy than for me. While you are more than happy to cuddle up alongside Mom, you often spend the night hitting me, pushing me, and kicking me, ensuring that you have enough room.
Last night you decided to sleep horizontal, which meant that there was no longer room for me and Kaleigh. Tired of being kicked in the head, I moved to the floor with the dog, where we curled up together and slept for a couple hours.
Eventually Kaleigh woke me, scratching at my leg to indicate that even though I had been kicked out of bed, she still belonged on a mattress, damn it. I realized that she was probably right and climbed back into bed, moving you over to make room for myself.
It’s pretty bad when the dog needs to remind you that you don’t belong on the floor while your daughter sleeps in your bed.
