Earlier this week we went over the Wolgemuth’s house for dinner, little one. In the midst of Ewan and Noah and Ariadne (and even Isis) romping about, you stood up and walked halfway across the room.
“Oh! She’s walking!” Justine said.
“Not really,” I said. “She’s taking steps, but she’s not really walking yet.”
“That looks like walking to me.”
Upon reflection, Justine was right. You were walking. While it’s still not your preferred mode of transportation, you have gotten pretty far on those two feet, and you actually walked even farther later that night in their living room.
Justine also pointed out that you were repeating words that Mommy and I were saying without us even noticing. Perhaps because we have higher standards in terms of diction and articulation, or perhaps because we are not so bright, we assumed that you have just been babbling all along. But once I gave it a careful listen, I realized that she was right. You were repeating words like cup and dinner, and while they clearly needed some work, I could identify them quite easily.
I guess it’s good to spend some time with more experienced parents, in order to gain perspective. I fear that the way Mommy and I sometimes speak of you, people would think that you are a legless mute, when you are actually capable of more than we ever realized.
We’ll be more attentive in the future. I promise.
