You attended a baby shower for Jeff and Nhi this evening, little one, at the home of a colleague. As is our tradition at these work-related baby showers, I brought along poker chips so that the men could play while the ladies opened gifts and did whatever else ladies do at these things.
Joining tonight’s poker game, however, was one of the ladies, also a colleague, who reminded me that I should not assume that all women want to sit and watch gifts being open when a game is going on in the other room. A good lesson for you, little one. Do not feel that your sex automatically places societal or cultural restrictions on you. If you want to play poker at a baby shower, you go right ahead.
Just for the record, Jeff, your godfather, did not play poker with us, even though the game was played for his benefit. He was unable to pull himself away from the festivities.
Having too much fun, I assume.
Tom, Liz, Jess and I played (and for a brief moment, you joined us, tossing in a chip and chewing on the Dealer button), while Jeff sat in the other room, opening gifts and reportedly being brought to tears at times at his friends’ wisdom and generosity.
This means that you played more poker and cried less often than Jeff tonight.
You can use that against him someday.
